Over 40 CUHK start-ups gather at Innovation Day 2024 to promote industry-academia-research collaborations and innovative entrepreneurship

The fourth Innovation Day, which is one of the “CUHK Innovation and Entrepreneurship” events that took place this year, was held on 20 September 2024. It showcased the outstanding achievements of CUHK’s scholars, students and alumni in innovations and technologies. It brought together government officials, policymakers, researchers, innovators, industry leaders and others, with an aim to create synergies, spark creativity among start-ups and forge partnerships.

The opening ceremony was officiated at by Under Secretary for Environment and Ecology, Environment and Ecology Bureau of the Hong Kong government Miss Diane Wong Shuk-han, Member of the Legislative Council and CUHK Council member Hon Lau Kwok-fan, Member of the Legislative Council and Associate Dean (External Affairs) of CUHK’s Faculty of Engineering Professor Hon Wong Kam-fai, Chairman of the HKSAR Innovation and Technology Venture Fund (ITVF) advisory committee, CUHK Council member and Chairman of CUHK’s Knowledge Transfer Committee Mr Nick Chan Hiu-fung, CUHK Pro-Vice-Chancellors Professor Chan Wai-yee, Professor Sham Mai-har and Professor Anthony T.C. Chan; and Director of CUHK’s Office of Research and Knowledge Transfer Services (ORKTS) Professor Benny Zee Chung-ying.

Delivering her speech at the event, the Under Secretary for Environment and Ecology, Miss Diane Wong, shared the Government’s efforts in promoting clean energy in Hong Kong, including net-zero electricity generation, green transport, strategy of hydrogen development, as well as the support for suitable innovative projects and applications through various Government funds.  She stressed that clean energy transition requires collective actions. The Government looks forward to close collaboration with and continuous support from all sectors in achieving the target of carbon neutrality for Hong Kong.

In her welcoming speech, Professor Sham shared the commitments and achievements of CUHK scholars in finding clean energy solutions through their research and innovations. She further remarked, “Over the years, CUHK has been dedicated to promoting Hong Kong as a global innovation hub through active collaboration with the Government and industry partners. We look forward to working closely with all the stakeholders in our collective effort to build a sustainable future.”

To further promote the development of CUHK’s startup ecosystem, the day included an online guided tour of the exhibition broadcasted in Mandarin, to introduce CUHK’s startups and inventions to political, industrial, commercial and academic guests from all over the world. Besides, about 150 local secondary school students took part in an onsite guided tour, enhancing their understanding of and interest in innovation.

Innovation Day 2024 featured more than 40 exhibitors, including six CUHK InnoHK Centres, seven projects funded by the Research, Academic and Industry Sectors One-plus Scheme (RAISe+), and other start-up projects established by staff, students and alumni.

As well as the exhibition, eight CUHK professors gave thematic talks on “Clean Energy and Advanced Materials to Achieve Carbon-neutrality”. Business leaders and CUHK professors also gathered for a panel discussion, where they shared their expertise and insights on the societal needs in terms of clean energy and how CUHK can make an impact.
