Business Area

Issue
Due to the limited human resources in rehabilitation centres and the impact of Covid-19, the elderly and persons with chronic diseases  often could not have sufficient rehabilitation services or they have missed their golden period of rehabilitation. AR rehabilitation system has been validated as an alterative way to assist the rehabilitation training at home and in rehabilitation centres. However, most of the software rehabilitation systems in the market only provide games and simple joint angle exercise. The patients want to follow the training exercises from their therapists to have a better recovery. They also want to know how to do the correct movement with real-time guidance. Our platform is developed to provide this real-time therapists’ guided training for them with real-time feedbacks.
Solution
Unlike other AR rehabilitation systems on the market, AR-Home & AR-Centre Rehab provide more than 45 special designed training activities  by Hong Kong Physiotherapists and occupational therapists, including upper limb, lower limb, balance and coordination exercises.  The system uses  the state-of-the-art 3D body tracking technology to give users real-time, objective AR visual and audio instruction and feedback during an exercise program, which can not only increase the fun of training, but also ensure the accuracy of the user action. The system automatically captures and stores  the movement data of the users in the training process to provide intelligent user performance evaluation and scoring. In addition, future training plan can be readjusted by the therapist based on user performance historical  records in the database.  Moreover, the system is very easy to setup with a TV screen, a personal computer and a small depth camera
Impact
Provide more regular training with limited resources in therapistsEnable the elderly and persons with chronic diseases keep rehabilitation training even under Covid-19Keep high-quality rehabilitation services for vulnerable individuals (the Elderly and Persons with Chronic Diseases) with intelligent feedback systems about their posture
Beneficiaries

AR system has been setup in 39 rehabilitation centres and >50 user homes in Hong Kong.
