  • New multimode waveguide grating couplers require relatively long (millimeter scale) waveguide tapers which if they use conventional linear adiabatic taper to expand the waveguide width from ~ 1 micron to the ~50 micron width for matching the diameter of industry standard multimode fibers
  • Long tapers occupy expensive chip real estate
  • This invention can substantially reduce the length of tapers for multimode waveguide grating couplers (See P-2019-0886 “Multimode Waveguide Grating Couplers”)

  • Enables over 50 times size reduction compared with conventional linear taper
  • Enables cost effective implementation of multimode waveguide grating couplers
